At Arden Endodontics, we understand that a bright, confident smile is important. Sometimes, a single tooth can become darker than the others due to internal staining, often following trauma, a root canal, or due to certain medications. This type of discoloration cannot usually be corrected with traditional teeth whitening methods.
Internal bleaching is a specialized treatment designed to restore the natural color of a tooth from the inside out. Unlike external whitening, which targets the surface, internal bleaching works by placing a safe whitening agent inside the tooth to gently lighten the discoloration over time.
Why Internal Bleaching Is Needed
- Darkening of a tooth after injury or trauma
- Discoloration following a root canal procedure
- Stains caused by certain medications or materials used in prior dental treatments
The Internal Bleaching Process
- Evaluation: Our endodontist examines the tooth to ensure it’s healthy and suitable for internal whitening.
- Access and Cleaning: A small opening is made to access the inner tooth chamber, and any old restorative material or staining agents are removed.
- Placement of Whitening Agent: A specialized bleaching material is placed inside the tooth.
- Sealing and Follow-Up: The tooth is temporarily sealed, and you may return for one or more visits until the desired shade is achieved.
- Final Restoration: Once the tooth reaches the ideal brightness, a permanent restoration is placed to protect it.
Benefits of Internal Bleaching
- Targets deep internal stains that surface whitening cannot address
- Restores a natural, even smile without affecting neighboring teeth
- Minimally invasive and performed by an endodontic specialist for optimal results
